After a few months of testing with SearchGPT, OpenAI's ChatGPT itself has recently been upgraded to enable real-time information in conversations for paid users, with other tiers on the horizon. This feature, directly integrated into ChatGPT's existing interface, leverages a "mix of search technologies," including Microsoft's Bing. ChatGPT's search engine experience, which will remain ad-free for the time being, is also fairly interactive, able to display stock charts, a sidebar for sources, and clickable citations.
Developers will be delighted to hear that GitHub Copilot, one of the largest AI coding assistants, will be moving on from its exclusive deal with OpenAI's GPT models to a more multi-model approach over the next few weeks. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced that Github Copilot will start supporting Anthropic's Claude 3.5, Google's Gemini 1.5, and a wide range of OpenAI's own models, including o1 and o1-mini. The same blog post also details the debut of Spark, natural language tool for developing no-code/low-code apps, available as part of an early preview phase to those who signed up for the waitlist.
Chinese researchers linked to China's People Liberation Army (PLA) have reportedly used Meta's Llama 2 13B model to create an AI tool named "ChatBIT" for military intelligence. Optimized for military-specific tasks, ChatBIT raises concerns among many as Meta's open-source policy heavily restricts military applications. However, due to its open-source and public nature, this makes it difficult to enforce. Observers have also noted that China's rampant investment in the AI sector also means that the gap between US and China is narrowing quickly, soon overshadowing any advantage the US might currently have.
AMD was another AI powerhouse whose third-quarter earnings recently released, though despite matching analysts expectations with revenue slightly exceeding estimates at $6.82 billion, driven primarily by solid data center sales, it failed to impress the market as shares sunk over 9% following the report on the same day. The company’s data center side achieved $3.5 billion in sales, fueled by its Instinct GPUs for AI, with AMD forecasting $5 billion in AI chip revenue for 2024, up from its previous $4.5 billion estimate.
Google Maps is introducing new features powered by Google's Gemini to transform Maps into a more interactive guide for users in the US on both Android and iOS. Backed by Gemini's conversational abilities, users can receive tailored suggestions, review summaries, and responses to location-specific questions, be it for family-friendly spots to hang out at or the reviews of a venue's atmosphere. Supported by data from 250 million global locations, Gemini's insights will soon extend to Google Search. Other Maps updates include real-time route guidance, detailed navigation, and weather tracking along a user's journey.
Noma Security exits stealth with $32 million in funding in tow, its Series A round led by Ballistic Ventures. Co-founded by Niv Braun and Alon Tron, the company addresses AI lifecycle-specific threats by identifying data pipeline and code vulnerabilities, managing misconfigurations, and securing sensitive data in AI model training. With a recent poll involving over 350 leaders in IT revealing that over half believe AI app complexity to have left a gap in their companies' cybersecurity, it's no wonder that companies like Noma Security and others have recently popped up to fill those gaps.
